(In some parlance, a Ghosttown is a ghetto within a ghetto.)
In the piece, ‘Kasoa: the filth of a nation’: http://alaye.biz/2013/10/kasoa-filthy-city/, we lamented the dreadful unhygienic conditions the people of Kasoa in the Central Region are forced to live.
A kind reader read the piece and wrote to tell me that if I think Kasoa was dirty, I should visit Chorkor, a sprawling ghetto in the nation’s capital, Accra.
On Saturday, October 26, 2014, I went to visit. A kind Chief who resides nearby took me around; to him I remain grateful.
Shock does not even begin to describe what I felt as I walked through the horrendously pitiful, unhygienic conditions thousands of citizens live are forced to live.
It is unconscionable that in this age, some citizens are still forced to live in such inhuman and totally dehumanizing conditions.
How do our leaders justify or rationalize the existence of these types of settlements almost sixty years after we start to govern ourselves?
How do the representatives (MCE, DCE, Mayor, MPs) representing these types of settlement live with their conscience? How do they sleep well at night? And how do they justify the stupendous amounts the state splatter on them monthly?
In deference to the residents, we have left out the more obscene pictures that show private dwellings and faces.
We all ought to be embarrassed that in our dear country, with all the wealth nature endowed us with, some citizens live in appalling conditions that will not meet standards for pig pens in some country!
